Speaker : Andrew Van Buren / Philip Astley Project
Over 35 years in the making The Philip Astley Project is now truly gaining a solid form with the Newcastle under Lyme area. With fantastic projects planned for 2018 Andrew Van Buren will be sharing his long time aim for the project as well as what is in store for the 250th anniversary of the first circus ring and Astley’s legacy.
The project is about Celebrating the life and legacy of Newcastle-under-Lyme’s most influential son. Philip Astley was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1742. At the age of 17, he joined the Royal Dragoons and went on to become a master equestrian and war hero. In 1768, Astley created the first 42 ft diameter ‘circus ring’ – the standard size now used across the world. For the first time ever, he brought together the different elements of the circus – trick riders, clowns, jugglers and rope walkers.
